I will start this post by saying we had a great time visiting family in Michigan last weekend. Initially, I wanted to spend the entire time painting and sitting on the deck enjoying the solitude at the lake. We stayed at a cabin that is owned by my husband’s niece. They graciously allowed us to stay there through our time visiting. Things didn’t go as planned,
and I only spent about two hours painting.

My initial plan was to paint the cabin and leave it as a gift for Jon’s niece Erica. The days were too short and this was the quickest I’ve ever painted. To top it off, I brought the wrong paint. I brought chalk paint. I normally paint with oils or acrylic and the chalk paint did not mix color like I hoped.
Chalk paints are also opaque, so it was hard to get a depth of color because you couldn’t see through the color. It was more like painting with watercolor. Also it would need a fixative over the top so that it would protect against moisture that could ruin the paint.

We had a wonderful time enjoying our family. I painted when we were back at the cabin. I know it could have been better had I been able to work on it longer. Look at it from all sides and at different times of the day.
The final result was completed the night before we left. I hope the family liked it. There’s a collection of items that others have left at the cabin like some baby shoes and a rock painting among others. I hope this painting will be left so future family will enjoy its depiction of a wonderful cabin that brought so much happiness.
